Tell your doctor or pharmacist before you take amitriptyline if you have any of these conditions.
It may take up to four weeks for amitriptyline to start working.
Do not stop taking amitriptyline suddenly, or without talking to your doctor. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not take St John s wort, a herbal remedy for depression, while you re taking amitriptyline as this will increase your risk of side effects. Controlled studies in pregnant women show no evidence of fetal risk.
Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Very little of the drug has been found in the breast milk of mothers taking high doses of amitriptyline, so breastfeeding while you re on amitriptyline is unlikely to be harmful.
When stopping therapy the drug should be gradually withdrawn during several weeks.
